The Great Blue Whale
— Nantes (44) — 2001
Designer: Freddy Bernard
Location: Nantes School of Fine Arts
In 2001, the Nantes-based association “Drôle d’organe” organized a cultural event in Nantes. In partnership with TAN, about ten artists were selected to create artistic interventions at the termini of various lines. Métalobil was among them. “We wanted something big,” so they reproduced the largest animal in the world at a 1:1 scale: the blue whale. A gigantic fresco (30 m x 6 m), painted on no less than 130 assembled wooden panels, was thus sketched, and for a time, the largest mammal of all time ascended the Loire.
